A Race of Some Fame

Posted by Peter Liptak in Poems, My Travels, A Sporting Chance

Based on that song of No Name

Racing the Planet - Sahara

Racing the Planet - Sahara 2008

On the first part of my journey,
I was focused on the road ahead,
I dove down the dune and shot for the moon
I ran until I was red
The first thing I saw made me stumble in awe
And the sky was cloudless above
The heat was hot and the sand was soft
By the end of the day I was dead.

I’ve been through the desert on a race of some fame
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert, you can run for your name
Cause there aint no one to tell you you’re insane
La, la, la, la-la-la-la, la, la, la, la

After two days in the desert sun,
My skin began to turn red
After three days of the desert run,
The heat it got to my head
The story is told of a man so bold
To see how far he could tread
He stepped through the heat that blistered his feet
And all his clothes he then shed…

I’ve been through the desert on a race of some fame
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert, you can run for your name
Cause there aint no one to tell you you’re insane
La, la, la, la-la-la-la, la, la, la, la

After seven days in the desert sun,
My legs they ceased to run
I started to slow and came to know
That the something had changed in me
Through hot rays, and hard days
There had been highs and lows
But as the story goes
My journey had come to a close

I’ve been through the desert on a race of some fame
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert, you can run for your name
Cause there aint no one to tell you you’re insane
La, la, la, la-la-la-la, la, la, la, la

Seoul has a dream

Posted by Peter Liptak in Poems, My Travels, The East

It dreams of light and life,
of vibrant color and vast urban spaces.
It dreams of incorporating culture with economy,
and evolving into a living environment
full of energy with elegance.
The city's dream is green, full of life.
Seoul is the core of Korea,
the center of action,
the heart of innovation,
the shared soul of design.

Coffee and a Laptop: What other superpowers do you need?

On Beginnings

Eleventh grade exposed me to an altogether different breed of educator; a man named Jon Rondesvedt, who bursting with enthusiasm for history, philosophy and the classics, issued us a challenge: turn in a typical paper or compose a poem. A daring dyslexic, I accepted…He beamed at my first foray, while his endless wonderawakened in me thatinescapable enthusiasm for the written word, thatlove of travel, and thatpassion forteaching.

Wanderlust came early in my imaginings, but a singular poem by Langston Hughes stirred my spirit to action. It was Dream Variation and much as Hughes had done in 1923, I struck out that summer, discovered languages and unexpected inspiration in unfamiliar cultures and odd little towns of Europe, found work in Freiberg, made my way to Matala…and found words in the languid stretch of sand, the leap from caved cliffs and that single demitasse of fine, unfiltered Greek coffee that was my respite each day. Since then, poetry has been my urge and my ache, my aspiration, my identity.

On Exile and Experience

Having earned my street cred in university as a preschool teacher, waiter, massage therapist, dishwasher & dance instructor, I determined that teaching was my ticket to the world, finished a TEFL certificate and moved abroad. 20 years as an expat has taught me much about language and about life.I found in Seoul a source of inspiration, linguistic and otherwise, and completed an MA in Korean Studies, exploringitshistory and poetry, while acting, teaching, copywriting and publishing through Exile Press.

As a traveler, I bring a catalog of stories to share; as a translator and sometime linguist, an outsiders understanding of the beauty and complexities of the English language;as a teacher, understanding of the classroom dynamic and an ability to inspire students;and as a publisher and constant creator, some real-world experience in the business of books. It is my hope that theseexperiences willallow me to contribute to the program and to my peers. Returningfrom self-imposed exile for a new journey of discovery-to poetry, to home, I’m excited by the prospect of penningnew projects.

On Poetry

Is poetry in the mind or in the heart? A journey of verse should take us somewhere unknown and yet somehow familiar, on a walk through the dark heart of words to the edge of truth, to the verge of vexation then back again, toa place newfound and fresh. Subscribingto the idea that,as Thoreau put it, “How vain it is to sit down to write when you have not stood up to live,” I went out and experience the world. Now, combining thoseexperiences and a willingness totear down and rebuild my composition skills, makes this the time to begin.

Though my workis largely lyrical, as an essentially self-taught poet, I tend to ramble and overreach inalliteration. I hopeto simplify and to uncover truths that will resonatewith readers from more experienced poets and fresh-minded peers, and to strengthen my narrative sense.

Eager to immerse myself in a community of like-minded creators, I hope to help foster more interaction between writers, designers and even animators, by interweaving poetry with art and multimedia to reach those who otherwise might shrink away from the idea of poems on a page. Bringing poetry to the masses is something that I believe is far more achievable than most reckon.

    Calamity

Posted by Peter Liptak in Poems, Death and Chocolate, Love's Loss, Passion Poets

    Sweat and soot
    bead brow to brow
    as the fire writhes
    in deadly determination
    matched only by your own
    single-minded, stiff-necked, staying power
    your unbending brawn
face to face with this fire.

    Whether driven by
    instinct or enthusiasm
    commitment or some innate sense
    of courage touched with
    the push and pull,
    the ebb and flow
    of terror and tenacity
    the thrust is on.

    An opponent…
    a partner
    enraged, ablaze,
    triggered to madness
    fueled by fire and force
    urge and appetite,
    unquenched and unabated as
    your ill-advised adversary’s interactions.

    You douse flames
    with the shower of wet
    douse, drench, soak and souse.
    Unsated
    your drive ignited
    by something…
    some flame of hope,
    some fire within.
Set alight, perhaps with a shred of lunacy
    sparked by some twisted balance
    of fear and urge
    caught fire,
    spurred on to deeds
    propelled by hate and desire.

    Ignited,
    our hero
    dares the deadly dance
    with those hot glowing bodies
swaying through the seethe and surge,
    through the fear and urge
    of brilliant orange-red
billowing with the bite and choke
    of the smoke, the odor,
    the pitch black
of the place of their encounter
where, for a moment enraged, engorged
    then extinguished.
    Fed by force, yet
    out in a flame
    absent of fame
left with a fleeting feeling of frailty
    in the aftermath of climax
    through the surging smoke
    heave and roll
now tempered only by the totality of destruction
like the lives left in ruin of the families lost.

What living beings lay in waste, what spirits saved?
Only sifting through the rubble will tell.

In the end, only havoc remains
    leaving you an unwilling accessory
    to the blaze
a fickle and faithless witness to the
    catalyst and calamity.

    Consensual Communication

Posted by Peter Liptak in Passion Poets, Love's Name, Poems

Consensual Communication PoetThe way your tongue wraps
    around those words,
    so sexy my soul salivates.
    Here, at room’s rear,
    I hang on every turn
    of phrase, back-arching through
    every bit of banter,
    every burning urge… surging,
    spurred auditorily,
    in every curve of word,
    every scent of sass,
    seared with sweat…
    Triggering the chill and churn
    in bated-breathed anticipation
    of your next
    exquisite
    utterance…

    With every observation
    cool and common,
    or heated and heartful
    erotic thoughts in waves awash
    in notions
    both naughty and natural
    haunting and hypnotic.

    Yeah, even that offhand assertion
    remarkably said
like lyrics, lissome and lustful language
    slowly ascending.

    …

Caught in that moment of unfettered communication
I felt unfastened, exposed and ajar, laid bare,
and though you’ve probably never even glanced in my direction
as you felt those words flow, that jell of jargon jolting (like barazenly-public fornication)
you set my mind in motion.
Fraught by your clear command of that language,
    that power and proficiency,
that MADNESS, MAYHEM, MAGIC AND MORE…
that left me exhausted, expressionless, in a heap on the floor…

I speak so, freely in your absence from our attentive audience
    though still unbearable to be
so far from the kiss of your words
the significance of such sexy speech.
    The consequence of those words
    intertwined with my contemplations
lay heavy, like our self-imagined exhausted bodies,
    gleaming as if honey golden
    shaking and spent.

Later, I lay and linger on your
    soft expressions,
the velvet of your terms touch
    cogent and convincing…
    consensually heard,
    yet visceral in its trespass
    on my salivating spirit.

    …

    Now in mind’s musing
I listen again in steamy secrecy
    through relentless reflections
    to that penetrating missive
    shared from mounted mic
    vocal and volatile
    and oh, so sensual…
    So I await that next
    whoosh of bated breath,
    of wetted lip expression,
    of fire and fervor,
    of devoted dissemination
doting on your ardent words wrapping me
in the fantasy of our eyes entwining.

      Dare to be dangerous.
      Dare to dance.
      Dare to speak up.
      Dare to say whatever
      is in your heart.
      Dare to be beautiful.
      Dare to say don't touch.
Dare to say when it's ok.

      Sitting at Starbucks

Posted by Peter Liptak in Poems, Caffeinated Contemplations, A little Burst o Truth, My Travels

(this is not about Starbucks the ubiquitous; it's about a certain place, certain personalities, people that know my drink and have my mug at the ready, people that are happy to see me -- that Starbucks in Itaewon central, that Starbucks is gone now...)

      Every day,
      laptop laden,
      I make my way
      to inspiration way,
      a soft-cushion destination
      for some deep-seated thought.

      Sitting at Starbucks,
      half aware of the chatter
      of the chit-chat girls
And the coffee shop gangnam guys

      The table circles
The pseudo art, the big green sign
      The walkers in, the loungers
      Work and distraction

      Muzak in the back
      Of my mind

I feel as if I am
      swimming in the fish tank
      of coffee culture
      writing wet

      On the be right back
Realizing that belonging can be nice
in this overly independent state of being

      I say I, I-I-I—I, I-I-I—I
      Just got to be
      Sipping latte’s to be free
      Of the day’s dedication
      To open-laptop contemplation
      To indifferent dedication

The tragedy is I can’t stay
late into the night, but I may
be back in the early morn
for the bright feel and the
Welcome to that simple-syrup sweet Starbucks smile.

is it so easy to leave love
to rush off without a word
to run away spurred by anger
          for what occurred

          is it not absurd
          to let go
          of something so sought after
          as affection

          to leave me lost
          my eyes glossed over
          exhausted from lack of rest
          once blessed with affection
          enchantment and emotion
          the delight of devotion
          of passion and piety
          discarded for anxiety

Sitting in the sap of spring
            by the weeping willow, wondering
            …whiling away and wondering
if the flow of time can be tied -
            have you tried?

            Binding it by a stretch
of willow at the trunk to catch
the flow of time and tide
By and by, near the Nodeul ferry riverside

            ------

Twig and twine tying time to the tree
Trust not its boughs and branches, not me,
To stop the page of life’s mystery
            the blue ever flowing by
mindless of the willow’s strength, and my sigh

As I sat beside the willow
With the ferry’s come and go
Across the river, it’s course wide,
By and by near the Nodeul ferry riverside

Square block, black and gray floor locked
A red light dungeon, candle dark neon danger
Dollar bill flat frogs hang iron chained
Like Escher wall coverings for the mentally unwell
Riveting me to a garden green Tantalus chair
            Eyes ever searching, returning windowless
To eight poets aching for sun
            One watch watching
            Smiling face timing minds
Testing poet speed traced in an underground particle chamber
            Accelerating minds
Tracking lap times, leap frog mental jumps
            follow Frisbee neon bright thoughts.
Two poets accelerated to thought speed
            Swollen heads collide spewing poetry
Like frog guts on the sidewalk
            Other poets analyze
            Dissect remains, pick at parts
            While my carcass whiles away

Now nervous feet twitch with the rapid-fire ta-taing
            Of one watch watching, waiting
            Recording to later re-record
As canvas boat shoes begin to splash
In dark blood dragging time from open wrists
            Whiling more, a while later
            Splashing ceases
With a red-green Christmas color croak
As time runs out to escape
Frogs and watches with flushed faces
            Face to face

The Bag Lady and the Union Man

Posted by Peter Liptak in Poems, A little Burst o Truth

A lot of people don't realize what's happening to us… What's happening to the middle class, to the working class, to the blue-collar class, to me, to you, to the union man. A lot of people forget because they want only to forget:

              Hey bag lady
              You old bag
              You hag
              You're a drag
              Bag lady

              Hey bag lady
              Sitting on the bus
              Trying to discuss
              All you do is cuss
              Stay away from us
              Bag lady

              Hey bag lady
              When you nag
              Nag
              Nag
              For a fag
              Or a drag
              Our noses sag
              From your breath
              Your airborne death
              Bag lady

              Hey bag lady
              Is it true
              When we rag on you
              Does your heart sag
              Into your bag
              Like a blood drenched rag
              Do your eyes sag
              From tears
              Bag lady

              Hey bag lady
              Did you die
              Does your soul fly
              Should we sigh
              When you walk by
              Bag lady
              Did you die…
              Or did I?

Posted by Peter Liptak in Poems, The East, My Travels, Caffeinated Contemplations

Visa hot in hand... 'merica here we come!
But when will we land? And what will become
of the friends who made this place home, those expat alum...
How do you say goodbye to 20-year associates,
to the long friends, the Seoul mates that made this place almost home?

And where will their fates take them? Beyond borders to what will be from what has been...
I will keep you in heart and head, remember all I heard and and all unsaid,
the things we did, the beer we had, the late nights kalbi fed.
To the runners and the drinkers and the thinkers, to the sometime (by-my-side) sinners,
to the incessant selfie girls' subway sessions and it's kimchi soju stench,
to every ajjuma in all her color, the sticky-rice culture, to the traffic - yes, somehow I'll miss you too.

So with tangled ends still untied. Making' knots and dotting dots. Still much to be clarified...
(When will the mad dash subside?), I bid you friends a fond farewell.
I'll await your knock at my door. And for those I return to, it is my pleasure to tell...
so glad to see you once more!

What happens to a nation ignored?

                  Does it dry up
                  like some dream deferred…
                  it’s citizens starving,
                  their vision blurred?

Will they wait in weakness, remain unheard,
                  caged and cornered, become inured
to military first, the fear, the force?

Can they be riled, enraged... be stirred
to take what was fed them
                  word for word and break the succession;
to shake the constant procession of oppression
                  followed by session after session
                  of unadulterated aggression?

What happens to a people starved
for truth, fed falsehood as fact
carved in hard stone as if somehow
the impact made it futile to redact.
Eking out existence in the constant quest of a meal, and yet
                  finding only thirst and threat.
Resigned to the effort unavailing, to the constant emptiness,
the hollow state, the impotent and fruitless quest.

Living on a diet of paradise lost and Dear Leaders parading
through the deafening hunger of false utopia’s invading
voices, drown in a thousand tank procession
wanting only the food of faith in their nation
                  their energy waning,
                  their fealty fading,
                  their patience lost…
                  At what cost?

What happens to a nation ignored?
Will it wither on in an untoward state
or rise up pen and sword with hate?

How NOT to make New Year's Resolutions

Posted by Peter Liptak in Caffeinated Contemplations

                  Celebrate Yourself Celebrate Yourself

By now you must have tired of all the constant Tra-la-la of Christmas music, the hangovers of year-end parties and, ahem, good cheer. Then in a mirrored moment, you realize that the time has come for shedding holiday pounds and making New Year’s resolutions. Many others will tell you how to make and keep your resolutions, for a slimmer, healthier, happier you, but I say resist the urge!!

As the end of 2008 draws near, I hear general intimations of resolve:

                  • I’ll study more.
                  • I’ll exercise and lose weight.
                  • I’m going to quit smoking (~again).
                  • I’m going to work harder, earn more money, etc.
                  • Blah, blah, blah!

                  Or more specific declarations:

                  • I will study my ass off and get all A’s next semester
                  • I’ll be more patient with my deadbeat brother-in-law when he drunk dials and wakes the kids

Or more positive (yet even more implausible) affirmations like:

                  • I’ll enjoy life more.
                  • And (my personal favorite) I’ll fall in love and get married this year.

How many New Year’s resolutions have been left by the wayside, homeless and unwanted, begging by the roadside only a few weeks, days or even moments into the New Year? Why trudge haphazard into an uncertain transformation, only to slip back into bad-habitsville.

Then there are those who think they should advise us on how to accomplish these monumental tasks. Doling out tidbits as they sit on their high horse smoking like a chimney about how to make or keep resolutions for the New Year. They’ll tell you things like:

                  • Be realistic (if you were really realistic, you wouldn’t even think about the New Year in these tight times as it will only give you a headache.)
                  • Set achievable goals (how about give me five bucks – that’s achievable)
                  • Be specific (yeah, like get a job, ya loser!)
                  • Find alternatives to a behavior (huh?)
                  • Don’t do what you think you ought to do or what others expect of you. (OK, so you resolve to what – eat more Twinkies (RIP)?)

If you must do something new to welcome in the New Year, don’t berate yourself… Celebrate Yourself!

Rather than getting frustrated with unattainable goals, take some time to reflect on all you’ve accomplished in the last year. Then find ways to facilitate a continuation of those things that you’ve been doing well and the things you love doing. If you really love all night Breaking Bad binges or dancing naked, own it! Enjoy the New Year – when the throbbing pain of the celebratory hangover subsides – and revel in the purity of being yourself, whoever you are.

And for those slackers out there – yeah that means YOU – if you really want to change your life, to get out there and sweat, to awaken a new part of yourself, to do that Dead Poet’s Carpe Diem thing, then if you are really ready, don’t wait for an artificial day on the Roman calendar, do it now, today, this minute! And do something really Earth-shattering. Don’t just change yourself… change the world, even if it is only by bits and pieces or in fits and starts.

On the other hand, if you’re just peachy with the way things are, and satisfied with your progress through life, then sit down, relax and coast through 2016. After all, the next year is full of promise. As for me, I intend to relax and feed my coffee addiction. Stick to what you know and be comfortable with yourself in the new year.

And as my friend said, “I’m gonna smoke more, drink more and watch more TV.” So “Smoke up Johnny,” if you really wanted to quit, you never would have started in the first place. Leave the resolutions to those with real resolve!

I love you in every long lonely walk home
                  from the fall of autumn
to the deep quiet of winter
                  through the early rising spring
to the lazy daze of summer.
I love you in every moment and every thought of my waking mind,
and I love you in every slumbering passion.
You gave me the music that comforts me.
You gave me the heart that holds me.
A subtle wink in the artful visions of minds memory
and I return to your breath, to your touch
                  to your slumber beside
                  tomorrow.

If I had chased you down
                  a leafy lane of fall...

                  If I had happed
                  upon your early midst
                  of springtime slumber
                  naked and sparkling
                  in sunshine's dew,
                  would your form be still
                  for my curvaceous ovations?

If I had come to you
in a grassy knoll bike halt
to fall on your bathing breast
                  in a salt
                  of odours
                  and summer sweat,
                  would you fret
                  or carefully drown
                  my stench
                  in violet passion?

If I had chased you down
                  a leafy lane of fall
                  with a downtown "Hey you!"
                  or a witty "Wait!",
would our love not have fallen
                  to such a vibrant hue
                  of maple red?

                  If I hadn't met you
                  in slowest winter
                  amidst a heat
                  of dark music
                  and smoky origins,
                  would we be together
                  in our ultimid grace?

                  Was "Sprechen Sie Deutsch"
                  my saving line
                  or was it my transition
                  from toe knee
                  to I'm Peter
                  or were you mine
                  always and I forever
                  yours?

I listen to the ballads of my blue mind
                  and think of you.

You are in the taste of blotted lipstick
on the lip crests of my morning.
You are the swift stroke and new razor
greeting the rough-hewn stubble of my face.
You are every drop of wet
                  in the shower of memory.

I sense you in a hesitant touch
as Tom Waits voice fingering my emotions
and I tremble and reach for you in my mind.

                  I think of fall wheat
                  and dream of our children
running ragged over the rough land
with dusk falling in a curtain of reds.
I sense you in a summer air of sweat
and heats frustration at cool evening.
You are in every knot of strained muscle
and every stretch and every stroke
in the oil of my trade.

You are in every eye of brown
and the secret of its color
with the captivity of my lonesome thought.
You are on the tip of my tongue
and the dry crease of my lips.
                  You are forever.

                  My love for you
                  has fallen
                  in rhythm of raindrops
and in loves sweat it drips

Posted by Peter Liptak in Poems, Love's Name

You, my sweet cherub, invade my night's rest
overpowering me with odors of seraphim blossoms
to send me on dreams of hue filled fields, towering wood
                  and distant lake. With daybreak,
you shake the quiet lake with dreams of past embrace:
Your kiss at last from sticky peach lips unwillingly sent.
I wake in ambrosial grass to see you soar,
winging white on blue sky brushed in morning de-light
from last breath of shaded night you dive into the clear pool
at my feet and ripple your reflection in the waters
                  of my quaking heart.

Late into the night your image appears
                  slowly, like Cassiopeia, to grow
in little specs of pure light
                  to challenge darkness and danger.
In full brightness you dance in my vision,
                  gliding graceful
billowing swan grey with filmy mist
entrancing me again with dreams of you,
only to wake trembling and faint
hot and wet from hand to brow
and I fear your shade's flight
                  felt like death
                  and flesh.
I need again that sweet embrace
to lull me in the pool of that warm lake of passion.
                  Encircle me
then release me to that buoyant otherworld
                  as that last sweet kiss
                  fades from my lips embrace
like the death, a swan song
                  in sweet silence.

                    that for me Sabine began
                    with her hair
                    and ended
                    with her lips.

                    Her soft curls
                    speckled with sand
                    hung always in her face
                    like fireworks falling.

                    Those golden locks
                    half hid her face
                    to heighten the desire
                    to draw me deeper
                    to see beyond.

                    She wore red...
but I dreamed of her in blues
as her hair cascaded over her carved features
                    I was felled
as a failed attempt of a tree to touch
the cool falls just out of arms length
                    unable to caress
those soft spirals, the shower of swirls
that had sped a spray of feathered shafts headlong to heart,
arrow with anchors to plunge in mind.

                    Her body spoke...
a tone hinting of the strength
                    embedded in her character,
yet my eyes lingered like insolent youth
on curves that could speak to any man
and leave him awake at night
in a restless scourge, a hanted haze,
                    as her hips
                    spoke in rounded tones
                    of the children to come.

                    But only she
                    could I approach
to soothe the sorrow she had spawned,
                    to trust her
with this sting of guilt, this stab of sadness
                    this instinctual urge.
I approached the source and she
responded such as only a mother could,
yet as this wry and wretched road led only to loneliness
scattered with slight but piercing shards of shame
and together in the stillness grew
                    like a changeling child
from fleeting affection to darkest love.

It was her lips in the end
                    those soft French lips
                    that made me turn away
                    from the fresh insult
of the softened touch of unreturned affection
and when those lips no longer
                    enhanced my eyes view
I could only say, in that ever-French way
                    "I cannot support this."

                    Only in my dreams
does she say to me now
with her eyes of three colors
and her lips - Oh lips
                    "Please"

                    why do I crave you
                    was Oedipus trapped
                    is my penis at fault
or is it just a boy's love for his mother
                    that projects her qualities
                    along side his lustful appetite
                    Red
                    you seem softer and
                    sweeter for the plucking
                    like ripened fruit
about to fall to the ground
                    but with a fiery spirituous
                    all your own
                    Red
                    you feed on my soul
                    you don't brown like
                    hot buns
                    but little sparks
                    like spitfire
                    prick your fair supple skin
                    flames burst from your head
                    in a fountain
                    showering me with little

of this, the play and all proceedings,
be now thus of Theban mind
and unto gods so be kind.
Knowing that the gods are real
as the Greeks of old did feel,

The poem 'Moses' was in large part inspired by this particular scene of a graphic swine slaughter from the 1993 documentary "My Brother's Keeper," which coincided with a incident that happened to someone close to me.

Why did she swallow the fly anyway?
                      Where is this woman?
                      Trapped in an endless song
Strangled by the shoehorn of our dreams
                      into an insane tune
                      a rotating door of death
                      with no hope of escape
                      no time to rest
                      no time to mourn
                      It always begins
                      with a fly
                      already swallowed
                      never a spider
                      or a cat
                      or a horse
she wouldn't start with a horse

                      Stop the madness
                      Break the chain . . .

                      I know this woman
I went to camp with her
she sat right there by the bonfire next to Johnny
                      Now there's a man
His story isn't in apple trees
                      it's travels and experiences
                      "The people he meets
when he walks down the street . . . "

Yon Yonson was the true traveler
not in miles or distances or even places seen
His journey took him within the simplicity of things
                      the discovery of truth
                      ". . . They say ‘Hi! What's your name?’
and I say ‘My name is Yon Yonson
                      I work in Wisconsin
                      I work in a lumber mill there . . ."

                        Teddy's Camp

Posted by Peter Liptak in Poems, Children's

With mom’s goodbye, the tears flow.
                        A hug, a wave… it’s time to go
Teddy gets on the bus to start
off for camp, sad to part.

The bus lets out on a field of green.
A flock of faces, strange and new.
Teddy sees a sea of smiles
from counselors done up in happy styles.

                        Teddy meets his cabin companions:
Ben and Ken and Will and Damien.
Find a bunk, get settled in
with the all the bears of cabin seven.

Down to the waterfront with the crew,
Teddy takes a swim in blue.
Climb back out, then jump back in…
The dock a rockin’ from all the splashin’ .

Venturing out to explore the wood,
climbing the biggest tree he could.
Teddy views things far and near.
The top of nature, green and clear.
The surrounding world abuzz with the sighs
of bustling leaves and floating dragonflies.

The lunch bell clangs, a table full of food,
To feed body, mind and spirit’s mood.
Then for a nap on grassy hill,
Teddy lay back to dream his fill.

Out the trail for riding fun,
Teddy gets on horseback to run
around the ranch into the sun.
                        Making tracks, gallum gallum.

                        Teddy spends the afternoon sailing
with the wind at his back, ever trailing.
Then on to arts and crafts to make
                        tie-dye t-shirts for color’s sake.

The bears rush off to take canoes...
A race across the lake in twos.
Teddy’s team silver sleek, cut the waves paddles dipping.
Woo Hoo! They shout, in rhythms wake. Through the water the craft zipping.

                        “Hey ho, nobody home…”
Campfire’s call, from the darkness come.
“The day is done, gone the sun…”
The friends are made, the stories sung.

                        The busses come, homeward bound.
                        Some sad goodbyes, hugs around.
Ready to rest, home to sleep sound.
                        Teddy’s journey of friendship found.

Smiling a welcome like sunshine raining,
Mom has come to the bus stop waiting.
A welcome home, a bright beginning,
Teddy telling about his trip, grinning.

                        Teddy’s Day

A happy set of sunbeams smile in
Through the window, the sun risen.
                        Teddy’s eyes begin to brighten,
All set to take the day’s sights in.

                        Breakfast ready, time to eat,
but can bearly stay in my seat.
Teddy’s dreams of the day to come...
If fun doesn’t find us, we’ll make some.

Teddy takes a ride in red.
                        Woo-Hoo! What fun! He said.
Feel the wind, see the scene.
The day’s dream... What does it mean?

A hunt among the reeds reveals
a line of ants looking for their meals.
                        Teddy wonders what they feel
when they wander under his heel.

                        Teddy sees an apple above…
Something his hungry belly would love.
Ripe and ready in the sky,
Perfect to pick, but why so high?

Teddy takes a break to think
Of color as he takes a drink
                        Of the Kool-aid Mom made.
                        It’s pink, I think I’ll take a drink.

                        Off to the fishing hole…
                        Bears never need a pole.
Swoop in swift on a wish
                        To scoop up a fish.

Teddy takes his nap in blue,
just to rest for a minute or two.
The sun still warm, the sky new,
an easy day for me and you

The drowsy day goes on and on,
                        better move before it’s gone.
                        The river rolls on by.
Why it goes... I don’t know why.

                        Teddy takes his tabletop seat.
                        Sitting straight with hanging feet.
                        What’s for dinner?
                        – Hope it’s meat.

Remembering all the day has seen.
Teddy takes his bath to clean
His feet, his hands, his hair, his tail,
With waves to wash and splash and sail.

A first book—for you, for Teddy!
To sit, to read. Are you ready?

Night has come, so sleep well
Take your blanket & I’ll tell...
A bedtime tale ‘till dream's spell
takes you to the morning bell.

                        Do fish like plaid
                        I do . . . Do you?
                        My hat is plaid.
                        It's a plaid hat.
                        A plaid fisherman's hat.

As I walked toward the river
to fish with my friend Pat,
                        I started to shiver
so I put on my hat.

It's red and green and blue
it's white, yellow and black too.

                        How can so many colors
                        work together
                        to protect my head
                        from all kinds of weather?

The fish were jumping that day...
                        jumping for joy I'd say,
for the day had grown to be warm and bright.
Those fish I'd say were quite polite
to greet us with such a strange pretty sight.

                        We sat by the river
                        and Pat
                        noticed a cat
                        prancing along the river.
                        Surely fish never chat
                        with a cat!?

That cat came along and jumped in the river
                        to make a dish
                        of a fish
at which point I started to quiver

                        For a high jumping fish
                        jumped into my hat.
                        It made a big squish,
                        imagine that.
Fish do like plaid you see,
I just wish they'd leave my hat be.

I wear them for the characters that come out with full force... I wear them by mood of course.

I am the boy who wears hats.
                        Like Bartholomew Cubbins,
                        I wear them for protection.
                        I wear them for warmth.
                        I wear them for flair,
Or to keep my hair—from flying.
                        Some I never wear,
                        Only hang them up
                        Like dreams upon the wall.
I wear them for the characters
That come out with full force...
I wear them by mood of course.
I never wear them to harm or to heal.
Those hats for me are just not real.
I'd rather feel the breeze in my hair
And warm rain on a face all bare,
                        Than use a hat's frailty
                        As justification for brutality.

                        The Word

A man in transcendental clothes accosted me in the street.
He asked me for a moment's strength
to beg a word and busk a poem's length.
A simple request, straightforward and true.
He'd write his best and I'd give him his due.
But at word's cost, my mind went blank.
My patience was lost. My heart sank.
I raced in mind's heat amid frozen breath
tugged at scruff and fought with death.
I thought of past conversations and discussions and worlds apart,
then at last vibrations and percussions of word's art
                        began stilted then spewing:
                        "Night, blast, blight, cast
                        Silver, quiet, quiver, diet
                        Pool, passion, fool, fashion
                        Menace, master, Venice, faster
                        Love, lude, fantasy, food... "
On and on those words did flow
and visions passed and time did go
                        as they spattered and sputtered
                        'till the sidewalk was cluttered
                        with words stewing
                        and woes eschewing.
Then a hunger took me as my thoughts assailed us
and I stopped of a sudden as those words hailed us
But one word was left and as is my fashion
from my heart it was cleft and over and over in my passion
I shouted "CHOCOLATE! CHOCOLATE! CHOCOLATE! CHOCOLATE!"

His poem came but moments later
by Danube made with word to cater:

"Liquid, solid, powder it don't matter
just the sound of chocolate 'll make my heart patter
You say milk and I say chocolate.
You say milk and I say chocolate.
I eat so much chocolate you say I'm a quack.
Need I remind you it's an aphrodisiac.
You say milk and I say chocolate.
You say milk and I say chocolate.
I love you dearly. Yes it's true,
But the color of chocolate is my passion hue.
You say milk and I say chocolate.
You say milk and I say chocolate."

His poem was simple, fresh and couth,
but his English was not so good in truth.
He read it to me and it made me laugh.
I gave him five shillings and crossed his path.

                          love's harp
                          burning desire.

                          You are my runner girl
                          of fated sneaker.
                          My heart weak, knees weaker
                          my frozen air
                          breath curls
                          in a dance it whirls,
and I chase you like a dream

                          I'm wearing a hat today It's blue
                          "Why is it blue?"
You might ask... As I do.

                          My blue hat
                          My blue cap
                          My cool cap

                          "Why isn't it purple,
                          Brown or Black?"
                          You wonder
                          As I blunder.

                          I suppose it's blue
                          Because it's made of denim
                          Most denim is blue...
                          You know. I do.

                          My blue denim cap
                          My blue denim baseball cap
                          My cool cap

                          Which naturally leads you
                          To the inquiry
                          As with me
                          Basically...
"Why is denim blue? Is it sad?
                          Is it cold too?"

                          It could be blue
                          Like a cool billowing breeze
but it keeps my head warm
                          from the cold winter's freeze.

                          Or blue... too
                          Like a sweet sad song
                          But it's bright and happy
And the bill is quite long.

                          I guess blue
                          Can be happy
                          And cool too

                          So here I sit
                          Wearing my blue jeans
                          My blue denim shirt
And sporting, before my afternoon nap,

My cool blue denim baseball cap
My cool beautiful billowing breezy blue denim baseball cap
                          My cool cap

                          And wonder if I'm blue
                          Too . . . Are you?

                          ...To find her gone
                          Blank like the memory

                          I love a child
                          A newborn smile
                          A great cry
                          From a firm slap
                          To the supple bottom
                          Of my quiet words

                          Her cheeks dimple
                          But smirking chastity
                          Chases the dream away

                          I scribble over and over
                          White on white
                          As she disappears behind
                          A liquid corner
                          I spill around
                          To find her gone
                          Blank like the memory
                          Of my fiction

                          Yet smiling, dancing
                          Ink-wise
                          Flowing
                          To return amid airs
                          To attend
                          To await poison

Soaring in the space above words,
it lowers its view to woods and lake,
                          circles and sees
                          and circles and perceives
fish and foul words for food.
                          Then wing, tail and feather
bend as a warped word descending
in a dive from a great height
to capture the food of innocent words
                          to crush and twist
                          with crooked talons,
to return to the place beyond words
                          and imagination.

                          I appeared
                          eyebrows frozen

only to be surprised by you

                          Again your eyes
                          crystallized
                          their tundra beauty
warmed my face into a smile

On a warm twist of winter
At 5:30 in the morning of Korean calm
An early bus slips past the chot noon [first snow]
                          Sailing down in windless clusters
                          Like whispers
                          Wetting windshields,
                          Highlighting the beaming headlamps
And washing by the well lit emptiness within…

It greets the faces of early commuters
                          With little welcome-to-the-day kisses
                          And brightens the pre-dawn
                          Sleepy-eyed alleys and avenues…

                          It alights on coated shoulders
                          As the late-nighters
                          Stop and stoop
                          To scrape the pavement
                          And pelt pals
                          Scooping and assailing
                          On their slippery descent
                          Down “the Hill”
                          Exalting in their intoxication
                          In this extra joy
                          At the break of Christmas…

Itaewon in the last moments of the millennium
                          Blanketed in white as if
                          To wash away the sorrows
                          Of war and the memory
                          Of the centuries past…

                          Oh the stars
how could i forget the stars
the spectacle of the Greek night
                          the great chasm of black
                          that connects to
the lingering blue of the Mediterranean
                          the mountains are camouflaged tan
                          to hide beneath the crickets
                          and the lizards
                          and the silent trees
                          as the specters slip
from caves deep in darkened tan

                          The black night is invaded
only by the moon's piercing glow
                          but Orion protects my sleep
                          and Cassiopeia fills my night
                          with dreams of heroes
                          after the Seven sisters
have sung me into a deep

                          Can you hear the locusts
                          all around?
                          They surround the palace
and siege the Minoan ruins with sound.
                          Everywhere an arid tan.
                          Windless
the dust settles on the green umbrella
of the trees dotting the intermittent hillsides
                          Then…
                          the wind bellows
tormenting the dry and delicate dust,
unsettled as if by the spirits of glorious armies…
                          Mycenae’s conquering troops.
A miniature tempest bursts from the palace stones
to settle again – but never settle like the spirits
and the chirping locusts all around.

                          The Grammar Lesson

Posted by Peter Liptak in Poems, Love's Name

                          You are my grammar
                          as I am your object
                          to accept your subject's intensifiers.
Set me off in any sentence position.
I go as well before or after your verb.

I predicate your clause and need no passive voice
                          as your active verb
is always there to curb my adverb.

If my love could be in an adverbial phrase
I'd be lost in a proverbial maze
                          of more, more, more, more!
In a daze, I feel your sentence curve
                          around my dreams imperative.

                          We need no articles
                          to cover our passion gerund
                          and our love lacks pronouns.

I will be your future progressive
as you are my present perfect.
Your adjectives are many and race in mind
                          and modify my sentence structure
as modals of would, could, can and will fill my heart.

I see no conjunction between us.
                          We share the same page
as you are my aspect and time frame
in book's art never to part.
                          I am your conditional possessive…
                          Will you be my Valentine?

Striped and spotted, it started and stopped.

                          Colors clashing, firing bright

                          Recollections of Han

                          Cityscape
                          As evening approaches,
And night extends the sky’s expanse,
A neon canopy is cast over the vast extent
                          Of Seoul’s story unfolding
Framed by bustling traffic and avenues aflood with people.
A tale reflected in the quiet river,
Soulful and scenic, where its Han runs deep,
Its water forever infused with history’s narrative
And composed by nature’s recurring chronicle.

I arrived before the dawn of humanity and watched the mountains rise above
Bearing the surges and torrents of time, then the lingering calm of peace in awe of
The generations of men who grow and wither, live and love.

I have weathered winters and watched the birth of spring,
Rolled through the swelter of summer and carried the leaves of fall,
Mirroring the lives of those who built their huts at water's edge, great and small,
Their reflection shimmering in the day’s haze to the sound of cicadas
And beaded with light in the scented night to elate us

I have heard the din of great deeds and inspired the poets to passion
And for those who come to reflect, I ripple and listen

I am the color ancient – the rivers flow,
The scent of Seoul, its coursing heart below

                          I am the Han

                          (Of Han and History)

Many kingdoms came to claim me, and I sat silent at their feet for a spell,
By-and-by they came to dust, yet my veins still stream with life’s swell.

My icy banks served the last Joseon king and lord
To preserve and send him in a procession that would strike a chord.
I was there when thousands fled south as the thunder roared
And held back the tide of fury as many attempted the ford.

Some 600 years, I’ve watched the city grow and people dwell,
As I rolled from the slopes of Daedeok in a swell
Joined by the gush of Geumgang gathered from the north,
With the humors of one Korea to join hands in Han and issue forth

                          Coursing into the Yellow Sea,
I cut across the landscape, rolling through Seoul’s history
I flow with han and happiness, miracle and mystery
Equally north and south, I know no borders
And when I rise, I flood by my orders

I am the Han and I am history

                          (Power and Privilege)

I am power, patient yet unstoppable, the eternal flow,
Shapeless, I run as raindrops, amassing might as I grow
Splitting stones and smashing boulders in my rush to lower land
My course may bend, but I bow to no man
… and none can contain my spirit

I am peace, nature’s enduring refuge, a place to grow
I am the welcome wind over cool water, the bearer of dewdrops and the channel of rain flow,
The scent of the storm, the river reborn

I am the yin and yang of ecology amended,
The river renewed its progress appended.

I am Han and I am hope

                          (From Rise to Renaissance)

I have watched the flood of humanity rise at my banks,
Seen the rolling hills turn to cement pillars in ranks,
Its carts to cars and serenity to speed, rabid with urbanization and blank

I’ve seen bridges built to span my breadth, and watched the wheels of time roll by
Soon to see the neon lights splashed about, blaring through the once still sky

I became the symbol of Seoul’s manufacturing miracle,
Felt footprints fall, weathered the tire tracks of industry and endured the metal plates of progress
I have known the wicked by the toxic runoff, and seen heroes made and lost
I have seen the guiltless die and the victorious weep at the cost

I balked and became a symbol of Seoul’s renaissance,
Transforming in tranquility, rebuilt and restful, calm and comfortable in response
I have fed kings and peasants, families and foes, secret lovers and lost souls
And welcomed them to share in meditation or wash away mountains of woes

You unsettled souls, come and renew
I am the Han River tested and true

                          I am the Han
                          And I am home

                          (An Aside)

I too have sat by the Han and listened to the quiet and the din
heard tell of those who had come before, and those who will again.
I have seen mountains of trash turned to family parks
And murky waters transform to await the song of larks
I’ve seen the footprints of progress slowly swept away
As its founding spirit return to mark a new day
I too am the Han and here is my home

                          Through dreams portents and visions
                          I found the Fertile Crescent’s
                          Mesopotamian world
                          Of Darius and Xerxes
                          From Cyrus’ long descent.
Ships flew fast from end to end
                          Close guarded by Persian ports
                          At Carthage, Tyre and Issus,
To gather up the world and
Place upon the feet of men
                          Whose hubris plays undaunted.

Then rose a polis to fling
                          Insult at Xerxes’ demands.
Greeks tore at the tattered fringe of
                          Darius’ weakened rule
                          For free men fight unchained
                          With wild arms eschewing pain
To protect that life they hold
So dear to city and state.
But soon greatness grew to greed
                          As Midas’ touch tainted
They fell to fight in factions.

                          Macedonian phalanx
Bound by land, bound to conquer,
                          Regained the great Greek world,
                          Turned attention to Persia
                          And doled greatest injury
                          At hand of Phillip's issue.
                          But Alexander alone
Could bond his conquered world and
                          Power fell to power new,
As Rome did rise to grasp at
Reigns of Neptune’s stone white steeds.

                          Then northern Latins rumbled
Down and splashed and stomped around,
Trod heavy on land and sea,
                          Reached full round Europe’s extant
                          Mediterranean sound.
                          But pillars of pride tumble
Down like men in acts of war.
                          Then, battle-axe to beaker
                          Mingled in Europe’s Celtic
Plain but left the world unmarred
By city, greed or guilt of sin.

[on seeing the documentary, Brother’s Keeper]

In the age before St. Patrick,
Echu Ollathir to us bespeaks through sadness of his love:
"The death spirit of the boar enters the body. It is the messenger of light. The animal is within us. The animal is the land. The land is the life within us -nourishing and whole."
So bespeaks the Dagdae of his love and also his sadness.

There she stood in the thick straw,
legs still unsteady from the twenty-
                          five staggering miles between farms,
staring out at the sun, warm and bright,
where Moses stepped into the trailer.

The Messiah looked down upon her,
judging her animal nature -- reckoning.
He looked up, as if to see
the Lord near the sun, singing.
                          He listened… and paused.
                          The sign clear, Moses smiled
as he began to load the shotgun.

She stepped closer to the trailer's edge
and greeted the Messiah's outstretched arms
not perceiving the power of his hand.
Dark steel gray poised, touched her temple.
She shivered and turned her head
from the cold whisper of its breath.

                          ---------------------------------------------

                          INSTANTLY blind from the noise.
In shock, though far from dead,
for God had not guided its viral spray home.
                          Pain and blindness reigned,
                          and she squealed… and squealed
and raced around in red fright,
slamming into the thin metal side of the trailer.

The Messiah wrestled with her, grasping.
His soiled fingers on her soft pink skin bruised her innocence.
                          And Moses spoke:
"Get the Fuck over… God Damn You!"
and he threw her to her back.

                          Her adrenaline subsided slowly.
                          She lumbered near the wall,
feeling faint, the cold metal and the hay
                          biting into her naked back.
                          Pink skin, untanned now spattered
                          with speckles of red spitfire.

Moses gripped his buck-knife in his right hand
pulled it from the sheath at his side
                          and jabbed the jugular, twisting,
released his grasp on her shoulder
and stepped back quick to observe.
Then Moses turned and walked away triumphant.
The Israelites remained to watch and wait.

                          She staggered to her feet,
                          stumbled out of the trailer,
stood and watched the life flow full
from the faucet at her throat.
She who was raised without God,
without religion, with no prayers to say,
no fight left in her vacant veins,
                          void of will,
smelled the hay beneath the thick scent of gunpowder,
tasted the liquid left in her mouth,
felt the cold earth hard from a night frost
and fell as the sun set its last golden ray
                          silent and sweet.

                          And the Israelites gave grace.

"The universe and the soul are indestructible,
but fire and water will sometime prevail over them."
                          So said Strabo

                          She seemed so serious
                          as if it took concentration.

                          "I am home in heaven, dear ones;
Oh, so happy and so bright!"

                          Born: February 9, 1924

                          Dear Mother,
You never asked me for advice
                          to show me how human
                          or frail you are.

                          Your life and experiences
                          so freely shared with others
                          are absent from my world.

                          And what about your childhood?
It could not be so unremarkable
                          to grow up with such
                          a large family.

I suppose I waited to long
                          before I started to ask
                          those questions of Rosemary…

                          At Rest: May 21, 1995

                          Was I lucky
to have not spent those last
                          few hours with her?
Or was it unlucky after all?
At least it was easier that
                          I was not the one
                          trying to hold on,
                          to capture the essence
                          of her
                          before she slipped beneath
                          the glaze.
I'm sure I will experience that
                          too much
                          in my lifetime.

A Long Drive To The Wake

                          Death is less real
                          in the daytime…
                          The funeral home intentionally
                          dark and drab, like death,
                          to retreat from light
                          and retire the mind.
                          I always dream that death
                          will wait patiently till night
                          and penetrate with stealth
                          the mind and body
                          and soul
                          from nearby shadows.

                          As a child I played
                          with my shadow, a shepherd
                          a friend,
                          never overshadowing.
                          The dance of our
                          chase affable and enticing.
Then someone told me by day
                          that my once sociable shadow
                          was dark and lifeless.
That night, the dismal symbolism appeared
                          and became thick
                          like the darkest syrup.

                          "When through one woman
                          a little more love
                          and goodness,
                          a little more light
                          and truth
                          come into the world-
                          then that woman's life
                          has had meaning."

                          Kolssak Funeral Home

That day I spent with her
                          in Chicago
                          taught me that memory
                          is of little consequence
                          when it is locked
                          in an open casket.

                          She seemed so serious
                          as if
                          it took concentration.

                          I have searched
                          for her reason,
                          her cause, but found
                          only consequence.

What did I learn from her
                          death?
                          Nothing… Death
is not a lesson but a reality
of which the only gift is grief,
                          but even this I missed
because she was not so close
                          in my memory
                          and her stories lost
                          to the cold transference.

                          Interment

                          Death
                          becomes an absurd story,
                          the reality of the living,
                          and life their illusion.

                          I was a pallbearer
                          at my grandmother's funeral
                          and her casket was heavy
                          with stillness.
                          She did not turn
                          or shift
                          as we descended the steps.
                          My eyes laden
                          with memory.

                          Aftermath

                          Rosemary
                          was, in a moment,
                          unburdened with memory
                          With so many memories
                          in the world,
                          her passage,
                          cleared the way
                          for some of my own.

                          What she left behind were
                          the common things;
                          the basic accouterments of
a person who's lived their share:
                          some furniture,
                          scattered pictures of little
                          significance without
                          much explanation, and then
                          still insignificant;
and letters that told more about
                          the writer than the receiver.

I had gone to Rosemary’s memorial
                          expecting a revelation…
having never witnessed death in person,
                          but there was no awakening
                          waiting, no new awareness.
                          She could teach me nothing
                          of death or even
                          of life.
It seems a cruel joke to take a person
                          and leave but a shell.
                          Is it really you?
Her lips silent, too stubborn to answer.

                          Eventually, I passed by
to walk again among the shadowy
                          disfigurements of the room.

Who am I to swallow a fly
                          Your thoughts or ideas
                          may tickle my insides
                          make me chuckle and think
                          or worse yet
it may carry a germ of insight
                          and afflict me with freedom
of thought and even, god forbid,
                          a moment of inspiration
                          to swallow other wriggling flies
                          and spindling spiders;
                          catchable contemplations
                          and the deadly disease
                          of knowledge.

“Where will it take me,” I wondered back,
                          “heart in hand,
past the epicenter of Insanity Station
to the outer edge of Lonely Heart’s land?
Will it derail and send me, worry free,
into some unkempt forest, free of feeling?
Or will I just drop off my baggage and ride
till I forget, her memory fleeting?”

Hot and humid, I manned the mat,
streached and strung -- out like a band,
wrecked with the wet of overwhelmed glands and that
                          constant voice of calm command.
Droning, intoning a vicious chant of
"Lock the knees, Lock the knees, Lock the knees."

Oh, please, the window... the breeze!
Have you have borne it, foot in hand,
                          grabbed your elbows opposite,
                          squeezed the knees and wheezed?

                            air currents race
                            as they chase each other
                            in the dusk chill.

                            Up lifting down…
                            frigid waters await

                            Up lifting down…
                            A spinning mind
                            desperate for decisions
                            rushing in wind.

                            Up lifting down…
                            the gift of flight
                            is short lived

                            splayed about
                            the room
                            about me
                            and my twisted
                            heart eases.
                            I imagine my fall
                            into the path
                            of the sped

                            my footing
                            lest my desire

When my demons come for me
I won't go with them willfully.

When my demons come for me
                            They chase my shade eternally
                            to holler and bellow
                            "Submit and follow."

When my demons find my shadow
                            all weak, my gut hollow
                            they plant their ugly seed
                            'till I kneel and plead.

When my demons call for me,
                            they steal away my pride,
                            they tease, prod, chide,
                            'till someday I'll subside.

When my demons last came to me,
I sat to share and soft sip of life
while they contrived to sap my destiny
yet I once more chose pain and strife.

                            When my demons shy away,
I worry that they've gone astray
in fear that they've abandoned me…
They've become my friends you see.

When my demons next come for me.
                            I'll go with them quietly.
My soul is tired. I'll rest awhile,
and leave with a tractile smile.

                            Should DEATH be capitalized
                            when its publicized
in the pages of the obituary...
                            or to the contrary?

Should we eat our words in respect
                            or be direct

                            or duties abscond?

When we die... do we fly
                            an empty sky

                            or melt - like butter?

When I reach that distant fate
                            whether great
with my soul from aching wounds slowly ripped
                            or soft and swift
as the aged man whose sleep draws a last breath...
                            DEATH should be – d e a t h
like the last echo from a great call returning
                            or quiet coals burning.

But what happens when a baby dies...
                            is that capitalized?

On the devilish nature of women: Seduction is an old man's realization of the true nature of what women call femininity. The true extent of which men wise in years and experience beyond all others will never fathom. The powers of femininity are derived from many sources: first the feline grace of easy movement and sleek lines carefully curved; then the sharp lined curiosity of pouty perfection; not to forget the lasciviousness of lavish lips; and finally the eternal tease of the trembling tail.

                            The eyes make a woman
                            somehow surreal
                            dark and devilish
                            somehow drastic
                            in their opposition
                            to the cool curves
                            of the slick mountain
                            roads I followed
                            up and down
                            like a man with a
                            new sports car
                            down and up again
                            to the sharper peaks
                            of chin
                            of cheek
                            Returning, as if

                            menace of her

Colored line drawing of espresso cups with curling steam and shared travel dreams I love espresso,
                            So sweet and so strong.
                            My eyebrows dance
                            As I sip soft blackness,
                            My mouth, once long, enlivens
                            With swift speech setting
A sun dried arch of life,
                            Spitting out pop culture,
                            Movie quotes of youth.
                            When I drink espresso
                            I cannot contain myself.
                            I speak to strangers
                            Of adventures
                            And far away places.
                            I tell them my dreams
And they join me. . .
                            To share sweet dreams
                            and sip espresso.

                            a quote from E. E. Cummings

                            What's that you say?
                            "Courage today?"
I'll stick to my insolent self-assuredness,
infuriating, unfriendly and full of fight
and thumb my nose at those who would
take me for less than my worth could bear.
Quarrelsome & confrontational, contrary you shout,
Disobedient, defiant, even demanding, I’ll tout my tack:
Exigent and aggressive, argumentative, yet true.
                            What's that you say?
                            "Courage today?"
I’ll be belligerently me… and you be you!

                            falling unfastened, the feeling ensued
with words tumbling from the pages of my mind,
eyes blurred, a flash of white, then blind
my world unkempt, disorderly, in disarray...

Full of spirit, footloose and fancy free,
                              we wandered within,
                              filled glasses, toasted fine friends
and I found my eyes fixed on Sunmi.

A meeting, which could have been
                              Otherwise awkward... unkempt even
                              Came sudden and succinct,
Calm and quiet to the heart,
                              Yet boundless and free,
                              Liberating as libation
                              Was she for me?

                              Uncontrolled, I ventured a word,
                              A tease,
                              A chide,
                              I grasped at communication
                              And without hesitation
                              Made a connection
                              Smiling with pride

                              By the next encounter
                              We had come a ways
Toward the gaze of glad meetings
                              Of glamorous ‘like’
                              Less keen than curious
But particular in the fancy of an idea

At third glance it was clear
That gaze had glazed over with
                              An unavoidable attraction
I sketched her face in mind
                              A length of neck
                              A smile bright
                              An outline of eyes
                              A velvet sky
And rounded the cheek into my theory
                              Of future impressions

                              The joy came quick
                              To take me, reeling
                              From an autumn burn,
                              to a heart-stopping feeling.

                              A race of mind,
appealing to the head and heart
for one to accept the leap
and welcome the wonder of love’s art.

Remember that battered piano room at the Student Union at ASU. The notes always a welcome lesson to the tune of the day. The moments seemed to linger like in no other place, in a darkened comfort from the desert sun they hung - musky in the air. Full and soft. Only a bit like the fine arts building just to the west - as dusk slowly descended, and that one student full of passion and sorrow practiced playing his heart’s jazz in a sax of sound echoing from the acoustics of the jutting sharp-edged building that seemed to emerge in response to such unknown systems of hidden machinery timed to rise in response, instant and invisible, just to hit that note’s point of perfection. I remember something of loneliness, some lingering bittersweet flavor – but the tender loveliness and passionate anguish of those moments magnificence will resonate forever in my memory.

A tale of intrepid beginnings, a nap and a flowery bloom of sorts. A story that left little Pete a changed snoozer and plenty awake for the flight of fancy soon to come.

One day, not so long ago but in a place, well not really a place (as our friends here were in transit – that means going from one place to another… and maybe even another after that), but anyway, somewhere not here but there and going somewhere not there but somewhere completely outside the neighborhood of our knowledge. Well, that day had begun without a night, or at least a night’s rest – for no one can stop the night, and so had taken our hero (that’s Pete) to the very edge of sleep, but not crossed over it’s welcome threshold into sweet silence and blissful slumber. This Pete, passing beyond tired, trudged out on an expedition, an epic journey, a trip, plain and simple…

                                    Christmas
is in the simple joys of living
It’s in reading a story to the kids at bedtime
and having your neighbors over for dinner
It’s in a good bottle of wine
and a mug of hot cider after two hours of shoveling
and eggnog in the morning while still in your robe
It’s in black and white movies
                                    and old Frank Sinatra records
and waltzing in the living room when you’re sure nobody’s around
and playing penny poker with your cousins ’till two
                                    It’s in huge turkey dinners
                                    and hundreds of relatives
                                    and even more hugs
                                    It’s in crystal glasses
                                    and ringing bells
It’s in a warm roaring fire
                                    Christmas
is in the lights of the city
It’s in cards addressing your mailbox
It’s in calling old forgotten friends
                                    and making new ones
                                    It’s in leaving work early
                                    and shopping all night
and spending more than you can but knowing, somehow it will work out
It’s in seeing your sister on her way downtown
                                    and stopping for lunch
                                    and setting aside differences
It’s in “The Grinch who Stole Christmas”
                                    and Chia pets on TV
It’s in friendship and love and all the good things in life
                                    Christmas
is in a newborn’s gripping smile
It’s in playing with puppies in a fresh fallen snow
It’s in watching your breath drift away in great clouds of white smoke
and throwing a snowball at your brother when he least expects
It’s in a field of birch trees
and how it feels to run among them
and playing tag in the snow when you were eight
It’s in streets lined with giant trees
and houses like gingerbread frosted with snow
and the smell of chestnuts from the wood burning stoves of your youth
                                    It’s in here. . .
                                    and it’s out there
It’s the stuff that dreams are made of
                                    Christmas
is in standing on Nicollet mall and saying to yourself . . . (just barely out loud) “Maybe, just maybe it’s worth all the cold and the snow and the heartache” because for a brief moment you realize that:
Every snowflake that falls has just a little touch of love
and every degree the thermometer drops is just a reminder to hold someone a little closer and a little longer
and every time your car won’t start and you have to walk six blocks to the bus stop it’s just a chance to experience and explore and realize how incredibly beautiful and awesome nature is
‘Cause it really is a Winter Wonderland out there and everything is… pretty cool.

                                    Innocence

                                    Capture the winds of innocence
                                    shades on the moon
                                    glowing soft in the distance

The swaying trees sing and dance
                                    among the rustling leaves
and send their love about in soft pastels

                                    Experience

Exuberant, they raise and dash the waves
                                    Ireful in their stormy rage
                                    Whether fading or growing
                                    They shape all with experience

                                    Wisdom

                                    Through cavern and gorge
                                    whisk the winds of wisdom
                                    whistling of civilizations past
and dancing on the fields of eternity

A voice rose to greet me in the forest
as if it came from nowhere
                                      It seemed to surround me
                                      pervading everything
                                      It echoed
in the crackling twigs of my footfalls
the rustling in the sunlit leaves above
and the rumbling brook by my side
                                      It came from the meadows
                                      the animals
                                      the sky
                                      and the Earth
                                      It swept over soul
like a mist rolling through the trees
                                      and softly spoke
                                      It wasn't a voice
                                      in tone or sound
                                      but it bade me rest
                                      for the tree
                                      and the brook
                                      the wind
                                      and the rain
                                      and the earth
                                      stood and embraced me
with the warmth of a mother's love

An old cottonwood stands jauntily outside my window
I sometimes watch it as I lie in bed
when the cool smell of rain is on the air
I can hear the wind in the distance
                                      but the tree stays quiet
                                      while I speak to it
Later, I will watch the rain drip from the leaves
                                      and listen for its response

This morning I went down to it
its trunk still wet from the rain
                                      I walked all around it
                                      As I touched the bark
                                      rough on my pliable hands
                                      I looked up
it seemed to surround and protect me

                                      I am alone today
                                      I'll be alone tomorrow
but my loneliness has a place now
a purpose which I share each night
with the jaunty old cottonwood tree
                                      as I sleep

Leaves moving like waves on the wind
and the sunshine filtering through on the breeze
to spin the spectrum on a multitude of greens.
The trunks, stoic and brown and still,
tower over the stairs diving down to the wide
                                      waterfront with a whispering rush
                                      over the shifting breeze.
A mast passes slowly beyond and beyond
the distant tree line the blue reaches beyond
the changing white sky drifters to stretch
beyond to colors of imagination, passion and
                                      togetherness.

                                      Sketching the duration of sleep
it seems, I paint my dreams with all the tints and tones
of unfolding thoughts rendered from my simmering head
As I let flow this flood of visions
                                      Of the scenes of dreams
                                      I stop and slumber
                                      With tinctures trained
                                      To mood my thoughts,
                                      and create reflections
                                      of subconscious introspection.

What dwell amid the rows of cement collars,
astride the mounted hills stepped with sustaining grass
and winding from the Seoul of late descent
came by morning of early trained mass?
Then met by Ahn the mentor and more, the idiot
when drovely driven to yellow the monkey’s crevass
did tremble to the sea by road and harried trail
and plunge into the tunnel’s deep hues of rumbling rail?
There is much to sea in a day’s busy tale.

                                      An Ode to Allen

Steeped in 500 years of Confucianism
The heritage of a dynastic Yi hermitage
Indoctrinated its population in the prism
Of expanding stasis, getting on in age.

Here begins the story of Horace
As he happed on the hapless case
Of Kojong and his hermit race
In a time of encroaching barbarians and Yi’s passing grace.

Entering on a medical ruse, Allen early paid his dues
A wife-with-child in tow, he’d much to lose
Sharp of face, a sharp-tongued missionary that
Found favor in the court at which Kojong sat.

The wedge of medicine he’d use to pry up
The walls foundation of Confucian doctrine
To catch the souls to fly up
That had till now been locked in.

The accidental occidental entered on a rough note
With the Kapsin at the young Min’s throat
Though misfortune would fall at his doorstep
Fortune would deliver a healing rep.

                                      Thrice diplomat to mission years,
This patriotic and mission minded healer
                                      Remained dedicated despite his fears
And forged concessions for American dealers.

To the end, a devoted diplomat
Preached the gospel of Korean independence
But those who knew, later said of that
He’d played into the Japanese dance

                                      The Choson Allen knew
Came to a bitter end at the hand
Of the Japanese as their empire grew
                                      To encompass the Korean land.

I remember following up the long incline
                                      Of cement stairs
                                      Along the steep sided alleyway
To the peak of our expression
                                      And the open expanse

I recall the lights of HeukSeok dong
                                      Staring up at mid night
                                      Arcing like an amphitheater
With the dark stage reflecting stars… wobbling
The light movement of shades across the Han

                                      I remembered your ballet
And the blackness of your velvet eyes
                                      Enveloping me in a comfort
                                      Lacking light
                                      A place not of sunshine
But the peace and rest of autumn night

                                      I recall the rhythm
Of my heartbeat in your ear
                                      The curve of your lips
                                      The color of your heat
                                      Relaxed… absent of fear

I remembered the length of night
                                      I spent alone — a time
                                      To linger on the laughter
To ease in with the music of memory
                                      The scent of you near

                                      The falling notes rose,
                                      My spirits,
                                      A jig of Irish tunes,
                                      Danced
And I walked on down the road.
                                      I told my lass
                                      That I must leave.
                                      Ireland was a callin'
And I couldn't wait no more
So I walked on down the road
                                      while the Germans shouted
                                      and the French wept
                                      and the Italians ate
                                      and drank to my health
                                      The grass rose before me
                                      and the wind dwindled
and the moss papered the rocks
                                      and the trees cheered
                                      and the sky wept
                                      on my route
                                      down the road.

                                        From earthen fairy mounds
                                        And bogs and rivers

                                        She hides her red blaze

                                        What of the original eleven?
Ten riders lost in the swells of intemperate sea
                                        Only one remains:

                                        I stand
                                        cliff sided and steep.
                                        A boatsman edging close,
                                        to the cleaving line.
                                        Crashing upward echoes
                                        from crags below
which wait in a dim swish of hushed defiance.
                                        Guards at the gate
                                        to the vastness beyond,
                                        marked
                                        with torrent and calm.

                                        I stand in awe
                                        of wind and sea
                                        encircling me with power
the raw throb and thud of ocean.
                                        I feel as one, despite
                                        the palpable forces
                                        pulsing in my veins

                                        I waiver
                                        and fall
                                        to the waiting rocks below.

                                          Will we ever find satisfaction
                                          with our situation,
                                          with ourselves, with others?
Send me a scrap, a slice, a morsel,
a moment of peace, a piece of pleasure,
                                          a hint of happiness,
                                          even fleeting fragments of fulfillment,
send me a smattering of satisfaction.
                                          The Stones' sad assertion...
                                          shouting submission to darkness
                                          be damned! I can.
                                          I can.

All were written in 1991 as I ventured from Athens to the volcanic sands of Santorini and ended my journey with a month sleeping on a beach on the South side of Crete in a little hippy town of Matala.

I danced a ballet in Matala
as I watched the mountains grow.
                                          Waves crashed upon the rocks
                                          in rhythm of wind power
                                          and I dove their heights
                                          to recount my sins.
The sun fell fast in a silent song
                                          of red and tan
                                          followed only by blue.
                                          There I went to dance
                                          and color renew.

                                          The black sands of Perissa
                                          spoke today
                                          as my feet slowly sank
                                          in the sand,
                                          each receding wave
                                          sliding back under the next.
                                          A rainbow of black appears
through the laughing blue Aegean surf
                                          and erases the footprints
                                          to where I stand
                                          as it erased ten thousand
                                          before.

There are colors here. . .
                                          dusty, olive green trees
                                          line the beach
                                          and speckle the tan mountainsides
                                          that rim Thira,
                                          that ancient volcano.
The houses - white and blue trimmed
                                          form a negative
                                          of the vast blue sky
touched with a soft brush of billowing white
                                          and the big blue
speckled and fanned with crests of white foam.

But the blood red of Homers sky
                                          and the rainbow black sand--
                                          black like death--
                                          shook, with clenched fists,
                                          this antique world,
                                          buried the prosperous Minoans
                                          and created the myth
                                          of Atlantis.

                                          On Crete, the day
                                          belonged to the sun.
                                          I walked with sandaled Minoans
on the rocky strand by morning,
                                          climbed the craggy peaks
to dive from Matala's cliffs in the noon's fiery light,
and swam the big blue waters
with the midday sun's brilliance warming the depths of my muscles.
Apollo's sun shone and filled my eyes with the Greek ideals,
and even dusk's red haze fluttered
in the pages of my drowsy book
carried on a breath of museful wind.

                                          But the night
                                          belonged to Anna,
the one the muses had kissed
                                          but I could not.
The speckled sky and the envious moon
were lost from my affected eyes
                                          for she outshone them all.
                                          More desirable was she
                                          than Eden’s apple
                                          or Paris' Helen.
Anna's face had not launched a thousand ships,
                                          but brought mine to harbor
                                          in Matala by night.

                                            Here are the rocks
                                            that jut from the ocean
                                            in the second movement
                                            of King of Kings

                                            The first movement-
                                            the ocean
                                            for surely its power
                                            came first

                                            In the recapitulation
                                            came man
                                            that first Minoan
                                            whose feet gripped the sand
                                            in the sliding surf
when the song burst through him:

"And He shall reign for ever

What inspired this poem was twofold: a wander through the woods near Killarney Lake where I discovered the gravestone referenced in the poem and the untimely death of a dear friend.

There remains an antique land of polished green dreams beneath a mist,
thick and clean, where great blue flutes in waves of wind sweep a waltz of Irish rain across a rocky plain, to plunder dreams in greens:

                                            It seems-
There came a lull from seven days of Irish rain
and though my boots still wet from journey’s gain,
this antique land yet plundered my dreams and on and on
I rambled down and round to where few had gone.
Around the quiet depths, a lake in mid July,
there did I meet a sight that drew me nigh
to it: a stone whose granite face quietly crept
from shadowed greens, then wan and white it wept.

I touched the worn words as I read their soft depths:
“He has out soared the shadow of all our night.”
I stood by its naked face as the shadows stretched out
to embrace the swift setting sun and I sat in the slim light
while the past wept in silent remembrance and forever etched doubt
upon my mind. Left only were the character and coldness of his fate
And in white stone the date: 1888.
The darkened waters spread out and the shadows crept all around.
The shadows crept all around crowned in sound.

Delve into that dream. Whatever it is you dream of… it need not fade.
